NATURAL HAIR POWER DOCUMENTARY

"Natural Hair Power" is a marvelously insightful and entertaining documentary about hair, in particular, African/spiral hair. The goal of the documentary is to reveal the historical and psychological reasons people want to chemically change their natural hair texture. We aim to destroy misconceptions and stereotypes about African hair that have, throughout time, cost the Black community billions of dollars, as well as contributed to low self esteem and a bevy of health issues.

Long Synopsis:

In his new documentary, “Natural Hair Power”,  filmmaker and playwright, Ajx Diop, answers this question: "Why are we not using our hair antennae to our advantage?" In examining the age-old stereotype of African hair being “bad hair”, including unmanageable and unattractive, we are led on a journey to understanding how these stereotypes have contributed to profound low self esteem in African people. The journey also reveals the economic, social, and political intent behind the advent of such stereotypes.

The "Natural Hair Power" documentary challenges these stereotypes and the resulting worldviews, through candid interviews  Black women, who span the spectrum of age, social status and background, to illustrate in their personal reflections and experiences how their lives have been impacted by the misconceptions and perceptions of hair.

Ajx Diop and the "Natural Hair Power" team, delves into different aspects of African hair, such as; meta physics, economics, psychological, and social perspectives. We explore the harmful effects of hair, the purpose of hair, and the history of permed hair.  The film ultimately exposes that a large portion of Black women are struggling with loving themselves, the way “GOD” made them, in a world that teaches them from the age of 2 years old that their hair is “bad”.

The film also takes a look into the lives of a growing number of Black women who are reclaiming their power, tapping into their God-given abilities, redirecting them to the path of healing.

This is the section for all the sisters hair journey stories.

In his early childhood he witnessed his older sister with sores and patches on her head. When he learned that it was a perm the caused the damage to his sister's hair, the image was impressed in his mind. As he continued through his childhood and young adulthood in Macon, Georgia, the "Jerry Curl" and "S-Curl" became popular relaxers. He used them on his hair and, as a result, by the time he was 35 years old his hair was thinning.

After reading the Auto Biography of Malcolm X, Ajx Diop begin to study history and psychology voraciously, consuming as much as four to five books a month, for 13 years straight.

Diop came to know that hair is a sixth sense that serves as spiritual antennae and that those who use perms/chemicals are constantly killing there blessings.
